Resignations Within President Trump's Inner Circle Following Violence

Numerous members of President Trump’s cabinet are discussing using the 25th Amendment to remove him from office. Multiple people close to the president have handed in their resignations following the mob’s attack on the U.S. Capitol, even though no one is sure who is behind the attack.

Transportation Secretary Elaine Chao

Transportation Secretary Elaine Chao, who is married to Senate GOP Mitch McConnell, handed in her resignation on January 7, 2021. She became the first cabinet member to resign after chaos interrupted Congress’ acceptance of the electoral college vote on January 6, 2021. She says her resignation that will become effective on January 11, 2021, was a direct result of the chaos.

Former Chief of Staff Mick Mulvaney

Former Chief of Staff Mick Mulvaney, appointed as a special envoy to Northern Ireland, also announced that he was resigning. Mulvaney says that he signed on to make America great again, but all that disappeared yesterday. Before being appointed as a special envoy to Northern Ireland, Mulvaney had held several positions within the administration, but he claims that Trump was not the same man he was eight months ago.

White House Chief of Staff for First Lady Melania Trump Stephanie Grisham

White House Chief of Staff for First Lady Melania Trump Stephanie Grisham has also given her registration, which became effective immediately. She is one of the longest-serving members of Trump’s administration and has also served as former White House Communication Director and press secretary. She says that she was deeply concerned by the events she saw at the White House on Wednesday. She felt that she could no longer serve President Trump during what she hoped would be a smooth transition of power.

Deputies Resigning

While Elaine Chao is the only cabinet member to resign so far, numerous deputies have also handed in their resignations. These include deputy press officer Sarah Matthews, deputy national security adviser Matt Pottinger and deputy chief of staff for policy coordination Chris Liddell.

Is National Security Advisor Robert O’Brien Resigning?

More resignations may be on the way, according to multiple sources. National Security Advisor Robert O’Brien is considering resigning. He may have witnessed Trump yelling at Vice President Pence for his refusal to act as Trump wanted while accepting the electoral college votes. O’Brien says that Vice President Pence is a fine man who he is proud to serve regularly.

Will Congress Use the 25th Amendment to Remove Trump From Office?

Several Congresspeople have called for Vice President Pence to enact the 25th Amendment to remove President Trump from office immediately. Senate Democratic leader Chuck Schumer put out a statement on January 6, 2021, saying that the president should not hold office one day longer because what happened at the Capitol on Wednesday was an insurrection incited by the president. Shumer says that the quickest way to remove President Trump from office was by powers given to him under the amendment, but that if Pence failed to act, then Congress should immediately impeach the president. Nancy Pelosi says that she also supports Trump’s immediate removal using the amendment. Before Congress eventually reconvened on the 6th, members of the House Judiciary Committee led by Representatives Cicilline and Ted Lieu sent a formal letter to Pence asking him to act. Section 4 of the amendment allows the vice president and either a majority of the president’s cabinet or Congress members to put in writing that they believed the sitting president was unable to carry out his duties. Then, the document would go to Senate president pro tempore and House speaker. Immediately, the vice president would become the president.

Many say that President Trump took steps to incite the violence during the electoral college votes canvassing. Members inside the inner circle are quitting over what they say are changes they have observed in him during the last eight months. Others are encouraging Vice President Pence to enact the 25 Amendment that would immediately remove him from office. Others say that if Pence chooses not to act, they will impeach the president even though he will be leaving the office on January 20. After Wednesday’s violence that left four dead, the president has promised a peaceful transition of power.
