March Madness: Trump Consoles the Nation While Fighting the Coronavirus

It has been a quite overwhelming week — one of which America has never seen before since the Spanish Flu Pandemic of 1918. Schools and universities are closing. Harvard advised students to leave their homes within five days and finish the semester’s classes online. Epidemiologists want large crowds and gatherings canceled, but the Boston Marathon may continue. All NCAA games including March Madness have been canceled. Disney World and Universal Studios will close their parks for a month starting the weekend of March 14, 2020.

All NBA games are suspended indefinitely after a player from the Utah Jazz was confirmed to have the coronavirus at the start of the Jazz vs. Thunder basketball game that took place at the Chesapeake Arena in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. Unfortunately, disappointed fans did not find out until the right before the game tipoff action. One could just hear the sighs and cries in the fans’ voices.

Wall Street stock market plunged 10% in one day, which was the worse one day drop since 1987. Trading on Wall Street was suspended. Officials are concerned that the remainder of the NHL games and the entire MBA season may be canceled or suspended.

Consoler-In-Chief

While these events have been occurring nationwide, Trump has shown leadership during the Coronavirus outbreak by compelling Republicans and Democrats to unify and work together to find a solution to combat the crisis and calm the fears that are penetrating America.

"The virus will not have a chance against us. No nation is more prepared or more resilient. We are all in this together. We must put politics aside, stop the partisanship and unify together as one nation, and one family."

During Wednesday’s televised prime-time national address from the Oval Office, Trump comforted a hurting nation by addressing their concerns for safety directly. The World Health Organization had just announced hours earlier that the coronavirus had become a worldwide pandemic with at least 1,663 confirmed cases in the USA and 41 heartbreaking deaths.

European Travel Ban

President Trump has banned travel from Europe for the next 30 days starting Friday, March 13, 2020, at midnight. The United Kingdom is exempt from this action. European officials were shocked about the travel ban since the Trump Administration didn’t previously notify them before the televised event.

Trade and cargo will be allowed to dock at the nation’s ports; however, no individuals from Europe will be allowed to enter the country. Foreign nationals, who have visited Europe within the last two weeks, will not be allowed entry into the USA. The travel ban doesn’t apply to legal residents. With the latest edict, the Airlines will ground airplanes and lay off up to 50% of their staff until further notice.

The Italian Outbreak

Italy has taken a strong hit with the virus — over 1,000 people are now dead. One American attorney traveled to Italy this winter and returned to New York while spreading the virus to other citizens unknowingly.

Governor Cuomo has since declared a state of emergency for New York. The State of New York has 328 cases, and New York City has 95 cases. Shortages of hand sanitizer and surgical masks are on the horizon.

Worldwide statistics show that 80% of individuals infected with the coronavirus will recover and possibly develop antibodies to combat any future infections. Twenty percent of infected individuals will require hospitalization, and five percent of said persons may need intensive care. A small minority of individuals will perish from the virus.

The Politics of the Coronavirus

President Trump’s emotions are still raw from the previous impeachment battle against Senator Chuck Schumer and House Speaker Nancy Pelosi. President Trump conveyed that he would skip the annual St. Patrick’s Day lunch to focus on an economic aid package to help struggling Americans. Trump now calls the Democratic criticism on how he is fighting the coronavirus as the “new hoax.” Democrats have been “politicizing the coronavirus by trying to gain political favor by saying a lot of untruths.”

The Aid Package

Trump is taking the initiative to reduce the financial impact on Americans. He has proposed a $50 billion aid package from Congress that includes a payroll tax cut. Taxpayers will not have to pay payroll taxes, and certain taxpayers may get an extension to file their 2019 federal tax return.

Businesses can get some relief through loans from the SBA. Some Americans may also require Medicaid benefits for health treatment. Democrats want to give Americans, who do not have sick leave, unemployment insurance benefits during their time of quarantine.

Nevertheless, Nancy Pelosi and the Democrats are fighting President Trump on his payroll tax cut. What is so unusual about the matter is that “Nancy Pelosi all of a sudden doesn’t like the payroll tax cut, but when Obama proposed it she thought it was a brilliant thing that all of the working families would benefit from because if you get a paycheck, you’re going to take home more money,” Trump stated on his twitter feed.

Pelosi appears decisively uncooperative with a Trump presidency. Assuredly, in the end, the coronavirus is looking to be a short-term outbreak. Trump will pass economic measures that will stabilize the economy and get America back to the rationale of normalcy.
